The New Town Hall is located on the northern side of central Ostrava and this popular attraction is actually far from new, being built between 1929 and 1930.

Attractions at the Silesian Ostrava Castle are not to be overlooked and include a gruesome display of torture instruments, vaulted cellars, aquariums and various exhibitions, while the seasonal summer Colours of Ostrava festival is regularly hosted here and draws the biggest crowds. Sports lovers will find no less than five large stadiums and in excess of 120 different sports halls, while theatre-goers have a total of four theatres to choose from, including the National Theatre of Moravia and Silesia.

The Ostrava Zoological Gardens are situated within Stromovka Park and covers an area of approximately 100 hectares / 40 acres. With animal attractions covering some 300 different varieties of species, tourists flock here during the summer months to view the elephants, giraffes, monkeys, rhinos and zebras. During the winter months, it is even possible to enjoy a spot of cross-country skiing within the zoo itself, while throughout the year there are various feeding demonstrations and talks.

Known locally as the Nové Radnice, the New Town Hall is fronted by four large statues, depicting four of the main preoccupations of the city - commerce, metallurgy, mining and also science. Those looking for one of the best views of the Ostrava cityscape can take a lift to the top of the 85-metre / 279-foot clock tower, where the scenery is actually surprisingly verdant. Bring your camera, since on a clear day you can see as far as the Jeseniky and Beskids mountains.

One of the most notable of all the city's landmarks and monuments from yesteryear, the Silesian Ostrava Castle was built towards the end of the 13th century and stands near to the meeting point of both the Ostravice River and the Lucina River. This splendid Gothic-style castle boasts many interior attractions and was remodelled as a Renaissance chateau during the early part of the 16th century. During the 1870s, the Silesian Ostrava Castle suffered much fire damage and also sank dramatically into a deep coal-mining seam, necessity the need for it to be rebuilt.

Ostrava Tourist Attractions: St. Wenceslas Church (Kostel sv Václav) - Ostrava, Czech Republic, CZ
An important and rather beautiful landmark, St. Wenceslas Church is an impressive Gothic building with a grand Baroque exterior and historical Romanesque foundations. The Church of the Divine Saviour (Chrám Bozského Spasitele) is just a stone's throw to the east and off the Ceskoslovenskych Legii, which was built in the late 1880s.

Something for families and all ages, the recently opened Ostrava Puppet Theatre is located along the Pivovarská and is amongst one of the city's newest attractions and public landmarks. The Puppet Theatre is hard to miss, since it boasts no less than five huge sculpted puppets standing proudly next to its entrance, almost resembling pieces from a giant chess set.
